dresses, suits, skirts and overalls in loose , baggie, straight and boyfriend fits, all might have come and gone, but the trend of body hugging fitted outfits and bodycons have always managed to slide into everyone's must- haves  since ages.

Well this style has consistently been prominent in Runways, Shows, Casuals, formals, Party wear and on and on. So why not give a glance at the history of this curvaceous style of clothing ?

If we go on tracing back into the history we can't come to one particular point of beginning of this saga . It can be seen emerging since the Egyptian Kalasiris  (worn by the ancient Egyptian Women) as well.

Let's look over the past decade,  what this look looked like. It has grown with the idea along with the  popular Bodycon dress, originally know as the Bender ( because of the way it glides around the waist).

Fashion in 1900's was all about contouring body shape by accenting the waist , hips and chest. It was majorly pulling in the waist really and propping up the Bust. All the woman , including Pregnant woman followed this clothing.

And in 1910's and 1920's the Hobble skirts evolved. These were long and tighter below the knees.

In 1920's the skirt became boxy and straight  and focused more on the feathers, sequins, and short styled hair cuts.

This shift was due to the new generation rebellion against constraints and conventions,  and also to  move out of the ridiculous style of Hobble skirts of 1910's.

In 1930's , the Sheath dress made its entry . It was a cotton dress, looser and bit longer.

In 1940's  Sheath dresses  were of body hugging silhouettes type as well as bit loosers , made with heavier fabrics.

Along with that, 1940's and 1950's swimsuits also largely gave way to the bodysuits and body hugging pattern of bodycon outfits. It does look like a premature stage of the bodycons we wear today !

In 1960's the 'Wiggle dresses ' came in picture and proved to be the precusor to be the 70's 'Slim dress'.

And Paco Rebanne designed the chain mail dress , which wasn't the tight body hugging one, but definitely lead to evolution.

In 70's, the Slim silhouettes was still very prominent , and the slinky polyester  fabrics became popular due to its comforts.

Good News !! Here comes the 1980's. This style started rising rapidly around this time. 80's and 90's proved to be the peak of this trend.  Aliaia Azzedine and Herve Leger were two prominent names,  that remained in controversy  for the invention of today's Bodycon dress.

Then comes 2000 and the Bandage dresses !

The skirt shape has changed over the period of time, giving it a more body hugging and fitted look.

Since 2020 , the awareness about body positivity started rising. The dresses fit the body tightly regardless of the body size. The dress fits the body rather than the body fits in the dress. Materials like silk , satin and Spandex have increased in use.

The body hugging style is being experimented along with smocking, Cowl necks, collars,  top and skirt and top and legging pair. They are now paired with contrast fits, such as a loose sweater, sweat shirts , shirts etc.

Isn't it just amazing , how our simple  Human body shape has inspired us to come so long, evolve amazing style and trend and eventually create a look that has, is and will be one of the most prominent look in the fashion history !
