1 ) TRADITIONAL ADOPTION
THE TRICKLE DOWN THEORY : Hoods and Hoodies
In 12th Centuary hooded Garments were used mainlyþ by Monks in the Europiean Countries. Workers did have some access to hood like caps, but was majorly within Monks' and priests' use.
In 1930's Champion sewed the first hood to a casual work wear made withFrench Terry Cotton and was used by upstate New Yorkers.
In 1960s , the elite universities started printing their logos on the sweatshirt, that was now called Hoodie and helped in international recognition. Other smaller universities also started to copy the same style and procedure.
In 1970's the Hoodie became globally popular.
Initially Graffiti artists wore Hoodies to hide their identity from the police, and till some extent some sprayers are known by the size of their Hoods. Other minor criminals used Hoodies as a garment to save themselves and therefore , hoodies were associated with a negative and dangerous idea till some extent.
But in 1976, Hooded sweatshirt managed to gain the Iconic status as Sylvester Stallone played the main character of Rocky Balboa who becomes a heavyweight champion of the world. In all the training scenes, Stallone is seen wearing a grey hoodie.
After the Hip Hop gained economic and cultural importance , major Fashion houses such as Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren included Hoodie in their sportswear collection.
Yet in UK ,' Hoodie Ban' movement in 2005 associated hoodies with Official Discourse.
Again in 2012 in UK, people wore Hoodies as a symbol of protest against the profiling used against non - white teenagers in hoodies , in context with a huge murder controversy.
Now , in 2020's Hoodies have become very ve common among all the age as well as social groups .
This is how a hooded Garment has trickled down over a period of time.
2) REVERSE ADOPTION
TRICKLE UP THEORY : Crochet
Crochet is the art of creating the fabric from yarn , thread or other materials using a crochet hook.
In Early 1970s
Tambouring , which is embroidery done on Tambour frame ( circular wooden or plastic frames with stretched fabric in between) , started spreading across North Africa, Persian, India etc .
Tambour started taking over Crochet's place.
Then emerged the Shephards knitting hook , which was a bigger in size.
It was in 1800 Crochet got its name. It came to be known as the Crochet or slip Stitch Crochet .
In 1845s - 1850s
Potato Famine had struck Ireland and as a result families had to resort to other sources of income in order to move to Canada or USA to save their families and start a new life.
This is when crocheting came handy. Families started doing and selling Crochet for the survival of their families.
Irish Crochet had comparitively more Intricate and detailed designs.
Woman and men sold these designs, and these started to gain popularity.
It had extensively reached abroad, mainly America, by 1800.
1920s - 1930s
It was seen with a perspective that it would prove to be progressive in clothing as well as
Accessories , and not only in home decor
1940s
It had gained a popular position in warm wear in USA and UK.
1960's
In other areas of the world also, Crochet exceeded the homeware and the Granny square sector, and entered the commercial market .
Today
Crochet is no more a women's sector of work. It has become an appreciated art capable of producing efficient livelihoods out of it. One can very easily learn the art through online and offline sources. Many online and small businesses are built upon this . Major Fashion houses such as Ralph Lauren and Fashion events like Milan have been been featuring Crochet in its elite collections .
Recently ,Crochet outfits have come into the limelight and is a prominent trend that is recieveing considerable hype.
3) MASS DISSEMINATION
TRICKLE ACROSS: Sweater Vests
Sweater Vests have been in the market since a very long time, but 2022 saw a clear up surge in its trend.
Sweater Vest can be used as an example to understand the Trickle across theory. The 'Trickle Across Theory ' says that a Fashion trend is experienced by everyone in all social classes at the same time.
When the trend of Sweater Vest grew, it could be very easily traced that it was followed by all social groups and even age variations were found .
The Sweater look was definitely slaying on the Runways!!
We could even see the bollywood actors flaunting vests and dipping their toes in the trend as well.
General citizens were caught enjoying the wave too !
Even for the kids, the pre existing uniform gained new found importance every where!!
This exactly shows that how a trend trickled across in all social classes around almost the same time .
These are some theories (and their examples) that are believed on how the fashion is adopted !
